China Seeks Visa Exemption for Its Nationals to Schengen Area, Appeals for Reciprocity from EU
China has made a renewed call for its inclusion in the list of third countries eligible for visa-free access to the Schengen Area. This diplomatic push comes as Chinese officials look to facilitate easier travel for their citizens, especially those engaged in business, tourism, and trade.
During an interview with the Portuguese news agency Lusa, China’s Ambassador to Portugal, Zhao Bentang, revealed that discussions have been ongoing with both the Portuguese government and the European Union regarding the potential visa exemption. Zhao emphasized that China has already requested reciprocity from Portugal, referring to the mutual visa-free access for citizens.
"I’ve spoken many times with the Portuguese government, and I believe that this topic was also raised during the visit of Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel to China," said Zhao.
Currently, while Chinese passport holders are required to obtain a Schengen visa to enter the Schengen Area, citizens of Portugal and 27 other EU/Schengen countries enjoy the privilege of visa-free access to China. This policy, which came into effect in 2024, permits travelers to stay in China for up to 30 days for tourism, business, family visits, or transit.
Ambassador Zhao expressed the importance of extending similar privileges to Chinese nationals, particularly for businesspeople who often face obstacles in carrying out trade due to the current visa regulations. He noted that the move would significantly enhance China’s engagement with European countries and ease the flow of travelers.
While the visa exemption agreement is set to remain in place until the end of this year, Zhao indicated that any potential extension will depend on demand and an evaluation of its effectiveness. "When the time comes, if necessary, China may consider extending or renewing the agreement," he stated.
This initiative is part of China’s broader efforts to revitalize its travel and tourism sector, which was severely impacted by the pandemic. By easing visa restrictions, China hopes to attract more international visitors and business opportunities, further strengthening its global connections.
