Can I Work in Austria While Studying?
International students in Austria have the opportunity to work alongside their studies, but there are specific regulations in place to ensure that employment does not interfere with academic commitments.
Work Hours and Restrictions
-
During the Semester: Students from non-EU/EEA countries can work up to 20 hours per week without the need for a labor market test. This means the employer does not have to prove that no Austrian or EU/EEA citizen could fill the position.
-
During Semester Breaks: Students are allowed to work full-time without requiring a separate work permit.
-
Exceeding the Limit: If you wish to work more than 20 hours during the semester or take a full-time role outside of breaks, your employer must apply for an employment permit (Beschäftigungsbewilligung) through Austria’s Public Employment Service (Arbeitsmarktservice – AMS).
Permit and Legal Requirements
-
Student Residence Permit: To work legally, you must hold a valid Aufenthaltsbewilligung – Student (Student Residence Permit).
-
Study Comes First: The main purpose of your stay should remain your education, and work commitments should not hinder academic progress.
Post-Graduation Work Options
-
Red-White-Red Card for Graduates: After completing your degree, you can apply for this permit if you secure a job relevant to your field and meet the salary and qualification requirements. It allows you to live and work in Austria long-term.
-
Job-Seeking and Entrepreneurship: Graduates can also apply for a residence permit to search for employment or start a business within Austria.
Austria’s balanced approach allows students to gain valuable work experience while studying, and also offers clear pathways to remain in the country for career growth after graduation.
