Healthcare for International Students in Norway
Norway offers a comprehensive healthcare system, and international students are entitled to access healthcare services under specific conditions based on their country of origin. Whether you are from a Nordic country, the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or outside these regions, it is essential to understand your healthcare rights while studying in Norway.
Healthcare for Students from Nordic Countries
Students from other Nordic nations who plan to study in Norway are eligible for healthcare under the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme. To qualify, they must be registered in the National Population Register in Norway. However, even if they are not registered, they are still entitled to healthcare under the National Insurance Act without requiring a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
Healthcare for Students from the EEA and Switzerland
Students from countries within the EEA and Switzerland are advised to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their home country before arriving in Norway. This card grants access to necessary healthcare services during their stay. If students are not eligible for an EHIC, they must arrange private health insurance to cover medical costs.
Healthcare for Students from Outside the EEA
International students from non-EEA countries are also eligible to access healthcare in Norway through the National Insurance Scheme, depending on the length of their study program:
- Courses longer than 12 months: Students are automatically registered in the National Insurance Scheme.
- Courses between 3 and 12 months: Students must apply for membership at their local insurance office.
If students do not become members of the National Insurance Scheme, they are required to maintain valid health insurance from their home country or obtain private coverage.
Additional Healthcare Options for Students
Regardless of their country of origin, all students should consult their university’s student support services for assistance and clarification on healthcare coverage. Many educational institutions in Norway also provide student health services, where a valid student card may grant access to free medical treatment.
Understanding and securing the right healthcare coverage is vital for a smooth and stress-free study experience in Norway. Ensure you are aware of the specific requirements based on your nationality and the duration of your academic program to access the healthcare services you may need during your stay.
