
Key Highlights of Schengen Visa Policy Changes in 2025
The European Union (EU) and Schengen visa policies are set to undergo significant updates in 2025. These changes aim to improve security, streamline procedures, and expand opportunities for foreign travelers and investors. Here’s what’s new:
1. EU Entry and Exit System (EES)
- A fully digitized system will replace manual passport stamping.
- Foreign travelers must register at the EU's external borders.
- The EES will simplify border control processes and strengthen security.
2. European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)
- Applicable to visa-exempt visitors from 60+ countries.
- Allows travelers to apply for pre-travel authorization to the EU.
- Aims to enhance the security of EU borders and foreign visitors.
3. Bulgaria and Romania to Join the Schengen Area
- From January 1, 2025, Romania and Bulgaria will become full Schengen Member States.
- Internal border controls will be removed, enabling seamless travel.
4. Expansion of Greece's Golden Visa Program
A new investment pathway will be introduced in 2025 focusing on start-ups. Eligibility includes:
- Investing at least €250,000 in start-ups listed in the National Register of Start-ups.
- Holding 33% equity participation in the company.
- Creating a minimum of two jobs within the first year.
- Maintaining the workforce for at least five years.
5. Increased Authorization Fees for EU Citizens Traveling to the UK
- Starting April 2025, EU citizens will pay €11 for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization).
- The ETA will be issued within three days of application.
6. Changes to France Multi-year Residence Permits
- A2 level French language proficiency will be required for multi-year residence permits.
- B1 level proficiency will be needed for ten-year residence permits.
