Spain’s New Law Requiring Detailed Tourist Information
Starting December 2, 2024, Spain has introduced stringent regulations requiring tourists staying in hotels, vacation rentals, campsites, or renting vehicles to provide detailed personal information. The Spanish government states that the new measures aim to enhance national security, but concerns about privacy have been raised by travellers.
Who Is Affected?
The new requirements apply to all tourists aged 14 and over. For families traveling with children under 14, additional details about the parent-child relationship must be provided. These rules extend across mainland Spain and its islands, including the Balearic and Canary Islands.
What Information Is Required?
Upon check-in at accommodations or while renting vehicles, tourists must complete detailed questionnaires, which differ depending on the service:
- Hotels and Vacation Rentals: A 40-question form.
- Car Rentals: A 60-question form.
The requested details include:
- Personal Information: Full name, gender, date of birth, nationality.
- Document Details: Passport or ID card number, residential address, country of origin.
- Contact Information: Phone number, email address.
- Payment Information: Credit or debit card type, number, and expiration date.
How Will the Data Be Submitted?
Travellers must upload their information through an online application managed by Spain's Ministry of the Interior.
Privacy Concerns
While the government justifies the move as necessary for improving security, many travellers and privacy advocates are voicing concerns over the extensive nature of the data collection. Critics argue that such detailed questionnaires might deter tourism and create privacy risks if the data is not adequately safeguarded.
As the law takes effect, its impact on tourism and traveller behaviour remains to be seen. Travelers planning trips to Spain are advised to familiarize themselves with the requirements and prepare to comply with the new regulations.
