The Exclusivity of the Maltese Passport
The crimson passport of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta is a rare and prestigious document, symbolizing both historical significance and diplomatic exclusivity. Distinguished by its vibrant red cover, the passport is more than just a travel document; it represents the deep roots and enduring legacy of the Order, one of the world’s oldest and most unique chivalric institutions.
The crimson passport is specifically reserved for members of the Sovereign Council, heads of diplomatic missions, and their families. The front of the passport is adorned with a golden inscription in French, "Ordre Souverain Militaire de Malta" (Sovereign Military Order of Malta), alongside the Order's coat of arms, further emphasizing its importance and reverence.
One of the distinctive features of the Order’s passport system is its exclusive issuance to members of the government for the duration of their terms. The Grand Masters of the Order, who are elected for 10-year terms and may serve two terms, are granted the longest validity for their passports. Their passports remain valid throughout their leadership, up until their mandatory resignation at age 85. For other members of the Order, passports are valid for four years and are strictly used for official diplomatic purposes.
The passports themselves are 44 pages long and bear a watermark of the Maltese cross, the iconic symbol of the Order. Unlike most passports, they lack additional images or decorations, further underscoring their role as a functional yet highly symbolic travel document.
The rarity of the Maltese passport often draws attention, as described by Eugenio Agroldi di Robbiate, former communications director of the Order. He recalls amusing encounters with customs officers who were unfamiliar with the passport, recalling one instance at Bangkok airport where passport control officers eagerly gathered around to examine the document and take selfies with it.
Recognized by two-thirds of Schengen countries, the diplomatic passport issued by the Order plays a key role in facilitating its international operations. The Order engages in a wide range of humanitarian activities, offering emergency medical assistance, running hospitals and health centers, and providing aid to those affected by conflict or natural disasters. Despite not having formal diplomatic relations with every country, the Order maintains strong partnerships and works closely with nations worldwide to deliver vital humanitarian aid.
In essence, the Maltese passport is not merely a tool for travel—it is a symbol of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta's enduring commitment to diplomacy, humanitarian aid, and the protection of its centuries-old traditions.
